Strange Bird Zirkus was formed in 2009, it is a creative partnership between Lucy Deacon (Scotland) and Moritz Linkmann (Germany). Strange Bird work on the fusion of high level acrobatic skills with a theatrical narrative.
Lucy Deacon – Artistic Director / Performer
Lucy is a graduate of Rogelio Rivel Circus School in Barcelona, she is specialised in aerial hoop, silks and Chinese pole. Lucy worked from a Barcelona base for 6 years, freelancing for several larger companies in Spain and in the UK. She gained a diverse stage experience whilst developing a unique style in Barcelona’s performance subculture scene. Lucy’s self written aerial monologue Felicity Pivot debuted at theatre, “Ateneu Nou Barris” and went on to play at festivals “Caravanes De Cirque”, France, “Trapezi” Spain, & “Ladyfest” ,London in 2008.
Moritz Linkmann – Technical Manager / Performer
Moritz started out as a mathematician, completing a masters degree in mathematics at the University of Vienna. Looking for more practical challenges, he developed an interest in the technical side of theatre and came in contact with circus. After discovering a natural aptitude for dynamic movement he started training as an acrobat at the Rogelio Rivel Circus School in Barcelona, later his unusual stage presence saw him enter the prestigious “Centre National des Arts du Cirque” in Chalons, France.
Since forming Strange Bird Zirkus, Moritz has been responsible for the technical side of the company.
In 2011 Strange Bird have successfully completed as 16 venue tour of Scottish theatres with their full length show Uncharted Waters in collaboration with All or Nothing, including a sell-out Fringe run and a nomination for a Total Theatre Award
Strange Bird are committed to the recognition of circus as a powerful medium of expression among performing arts. We narrate in a magic realist fashion through expressive movement that surpasses the conventionally possible. As creators of work with an intellectual content Strange Bird are interested in the comedy and the fragility of the human being and in the intricacy of human relationships and situations of all kinds.
